Pakistani military Thursday clarified that the recent arrest of a former Pakistani army officer in the United States was not linked to the failed bombing earlier this month in New York's Times Square.
The private TV Express quoted Pakistani military spokesman Major General Athar Abbas as saying that "the truth was distorted in the media."
He said that the retired officer's arrest was not linked to Faisal Shahzad, the failed car bombing suspect.
"The officer was removed from service for indiscipline," Abbas said.
The U.S. media reported that the officer (the name remained undisclosed) who held the rank of a major in the Pakistan army and was arrested in recent days in America, met Shahzad in the capital of Islamabad during Shahzad's months' long trip to Pakistan last year.
The Los Angeles Times quoted American law enforcement officials as saying that the Pakistani officer had been in contact with the suspect by cell phone. However, the nature of his involvement was not clear, the newspaper reported.
The Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) had claimed the responsibility of the aborted Times Square bombing attempt, but the authorities in the United States doubt they would have the capability.
